The Baby Show features products, services and experts to help you through your pregnancy, life with a new baby and parenting in those first few years. Visit Toronto's premium early parenting show coming up on Saturday, September 23rd from 9am to 6pm and Sunday, September 24th from 10am to 5pm at the Enercare Centre, Hall D, Exhibition Place, Toronto.
Exhibition Place is known for its bright lights, shows and events, but lurking below the surface are a few well-kept secrets that, until this walking tour, were known only to staff who work the late shift.
That the grounds should harbour otherworldly visitors is not much of a surprise: the Horticulture Building was once used as a temporary morgue; the current site of the CNE midway was a bloody battlefield during the War of 1812; and the grounds were once home to two military forts. Not to mention the grounds own long history, going back to before the founding of the CNE in 1879 – plenty of time and plenty of reasons for an accumulation of “things that go bump in the night.”
Our ghost walks evolved out of actual paranormal experiences of staff at Exhibition Place. Almost everyone has a story to tell – including many people who, beforehand, would have claimed to be non-believers. Staff of the Archives gathered all the stories and presented an exhibit during the 2009 CNE on the haunted buildings at Exhibition Place. A paranormal researcher, Richard Palmisano, saw our exhibit and asked if he could investigate our buildings. Senior management gave their approval and staff of the Archives spent nearly every Saturday night in 2010 investigating different buildings at Exhibition Place with Richard and his team (collectively known as the Searcher Group).
In 2011, we did a second exhibit during the CNE on the ghosts and hauntings at Exhibition Place which included both staff stories and Richard’s research results. Richard also had a book published on his investigations entitled “Ghosts of the Canadian National Exhibition” (Dundurn Press, 2012). Our Ghost Walks include stories told by Exhibition Place staff and findings by the Searcher Group during their investigations.
